I went there in the early '80's so probably of no use advise wise these days ...
Most important thing is for your boy to do "The Topsham 10" ! Right of passage an' all that!
Oh! and 'Hope Hall' was the best halls of residence. The 'Red Cow' was the best student pub and avoid the White Heart; it was full of student bashing Navy chaps!

Went to a stag do there and the nightlife seemed ok, with a decent club. Lots of squaddies about who are often banned from the clubs as they like a ruck. Close to good beaches too so all in all a good place to study with a good reputation.

I work with one of the groundsmen at Exeter Uni.
I also play football on the astro there.

Great pub opposite the university called The Imperial.
My brother did his PhD at Exeter and said it was a decent uni. Also was home to Professor Edzard Ernst, famously called Prince Charles a snake oil salesman, for a few years.

Daughter went there a few years back good university, altho not a huge amount of nightlife as Exeter is a small city. Did not bother her as she is not much of a clubber, probably doesn't bother you as a Dad! She got a 2.1 in French and German and has a good job now.

I don't know anyone who was at Exeter, but my mate lived there for a couple of years. Lovely place to be, and the students loved it there.
If he's interested in Cardiff, Bath, Cambridge, Kent or Leeds, I can be of more help....
